April Lawson, Alto I was born and raised in the “Dirty South,” having spent most my life just outside Atlanta, GA. Though I neither grow peanuts nor pick peaches, I do make an intense sweet tea. I started training vocally seven years ago, but I've been singing since I could talk. My father and brother were huge influences in my musical background, and have led me to be somewhat generationally left behind by my peers - I'm a sucker for oldies and classic rock, but my passion is jazz. I sang with local and school groups since from age twelve on, including The One-Way Singers (traveling musical performance group). I also performed with GMEA All-State Choir for 6 years. My first and only complete cappella experience before Similar Jones was with a competitive trio (all girl), 2000-2001. In high school, my focus was on both musical - (Man of LaMancha -- prisoner, Children of Eden -- Snake, Grease -- Rizzo, to name a few) and non-musical theatre -- I was in the Athena's Players production of Vagina Monologues in spring 2002, and assistant directed for California Suite as part of Athenastock (Fall 2002). I recently graduated Boston University's College of Arts and Sciences, majoring in Public Relations and English, and minoring in Theatre (whew). Besides a performer, I am also a huge nerd (member of CAS Honors Program), an office assistant (nice word for unproductive secretary), and the vice president of my Residence Housing Association.
